Envy   One-a-Day Friday 7/14/23

A life worthy

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy… (1 Corinthians 13:4).

If I’m looking at you, then I’m not looking at Him.

If I’m obsessed with what He’s given you, then I’m not thankful for what He’s given me.

If I’m trying to be you, then how, Beloved, how can I be conformed to the image of His Son?

but

If I’m trying to love you

I will rejoice in your success.

If I’m trying to love you

I will praise God for the gifts He has given you.

If I’m trying to love you

I will use my gifts to strengthen and encourage you

so  that together we might glorify God.

Even when you annoy me

which, alas, is often.

Happy Friday, Beloved

Kind   One-a-Day Thursday 7/13/23

A life worthy

Love is patient, love is kind  (1 Corinthians 13:4).

Kindness is harder than it looks.

I mean, on the one hand, it’s no big deal. It’s not like you’re rushing into a burning building to save puppies and babies and my grandma.

That’s heroism, not kindness.

It’s not like you’ve locked yourself in a lab and dedicated your life to the eradication of smallpox or polio.

That would be selfless, and also kinda sad since we have those diseases under control, but not kind.

It’s not like you’re staring unblinking down the barrel of a machine gun, singing hymns at the top of your lungs and slightly off-key while a terrorist demands that you reject Christ.

That would be…I don’t know what that would be, but it’s way beyond kindness.

Kindness is the little things.

Letting someone go ahead of you in line

Helping someone up after they’ve tripped, and not laughing until you’re sure that they’re OK

Listening to the story you’ve already heard 1000 times and laughing even though it wasn’t even funny the first time

In short, kindness is seeing the other person, noticing what they need, and meeting it–even if it costs you something and gains you nothing.

Let’s face it–Your chances to be heroic today are pretty slim. I mean, how likely is it that you’re going to come across a burning building, unless you set the fire yourself, and I’m pretty sure you don’t get hero points in that case.

But

you will have multiple opportunities to be kind today.

Take them.

Happy Thursday, Beloved

Patient One-a-Day Wednesday 7/12/23

A life worthy

Love is patient… (1 Corinthians 13:4).

Remember that part where it’s not about me?

Well, here we go again.

When I am focused only on myself–the Bible sometimes calls that being “in the flesh”–I am concerned only about my own timetable.

“Let’s get a move on”

“I need you to hurry up.”

“I have to be somewhere.”

“I don’t have time for this.”

“What is taking you so loooong!”

In those all-too-frequent moments, I don’t give a rip about what is happening to the people around me, except in the context of how it is slowing me down.

Not loving

Here’s a little test, Beloved–you are in heavy traffic, running later and later, getting more and more stressed, when you see the lights of emergency vehicles ahead. How do you react?

1. You immediately begin to pray for the people involved in the accident, both the injured and the emergency responders. You pray that God would protect and give wisdom and draw people closer to Himself and generally be glorified in the situation. Congratulations, Beloved! You have just loved.

or

2. You breathe a sigh of relief and say, “Whew! It’s an accident. The road should be clear after this!”  Thanks for playing. Enjoy your parting gifts.

Patience requires looking beyond yourself and your timeframe and considering the needs of others–even putting them first. That’s what makes it loving.

That’s also what makes it difficult.

Because people are often dumb and slow and get in my way and…

oops

Happy Wednesday. Beloved.

Without Love One-a-Day Tuesday 7/11/23

A life worthy

If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. If I give all I possess to the poor and surrender my body to the flames, but have not love, I gain nothing (1 Corinthians 13:1-3).

The opposite of love is not hate.

The opposite of love is pride.

When you operate in love, you put the loved one first. Everything you do is for their benefit. When you operate in pride, you put yourself first. Everything you do is for your own benefit.

Pretty simple, really

All the spiritual gifts and Church roles that Paul has been discussing have one thing in common–they must be exercised in love. If not, they become sources of pride and self aggrandizement and LookatmeamInotawesomeness.

God will not honor that.

He will not bring the power of the Holy Spirit into that.

He will not bless that, any more than he blessed the Tower of Babel–and for much the same reason.

And so, your gifts and your work will come to nothing.

Beloved, do not focus on your spiritual gifts, or on your role in the Church. Focus on the people you serve, and the love God gives you for them. Pour out a foundation of love, and see what God will build on it.

Happy Tuesday, Beloved

Most Excellent  One-a-Day Monday  7/10/23

A life worthy

And now I will show you the most excellent way (1 Corinthians 12:31).

Most excellent

I just can’t say those words without Bill and Ted leaping to my mind.

If you don’t know who I am talking about, you are either too young, too old (highly unlikely), or you have spent significant time off-planet. If you do know who I’m talking about, you probably have the same reaction I do:

Who knew the boys were quoting Scripture?

Anyway, as Paul wraps up his discussion on spiritual gifts he preps us for the next big idea:

Love is more important than any of it.

Paul’s not undermining the value of spiritual gifts–he’s burned through a lot of papyrus talking about them–but he is pointing out that love is even more important. And Beloved, here’s the great part–anyone can love. It doesn’t matter if you are a hand or a foot or an eye or a spleen, we all have the same capacity to love. So, as we prep for the famous Love Chapter, remember that you are as capable of this as anyone.

Be excellent to one another.

Happy Monday, Beloved

The Greater Gifts    One-a-Day Friday 7/7/23

A life worthy

Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work miracles? Do all have gifts of healing? Do all speak in tongues? Do all interpret? But eagerly desire the greater gifts (1 Corinthians 12:29-30).

According to my trusty NIV Study Bible, this passage has two possible translations. The way it is written, “But eagerly desire the greater gifts,” is an encouragement to pursue God and the blessings of His Spirit. “Further up and further in,” as C.S. Lewis would say. That is the translation NIV goes with, and it works for me. Another possibility, however, is “But you are eagerly desiring the greater gifts.” In this case, Paul would be rebuking his readers for going after the status and prestige that might accompany more dramatic gifts. The guy who is throwing around prophecies in church will get a lot more attention than the man who is quietly tending to the needs of the poor, and some people are drawn by the spotlight.

It seems to me that either translation, taken in context, comes around to the same concept:

It’s not about you.

The gifts are given by God, for HIs Church, through you. You and I are like the hose in my garden. We deliver the water to the thirsty plants. If we start to think that we are overly important in this process, then we get kinked up and useless. If we try to stand out and get attention, someone’s going to trip over us.

I think that’s about as far as I can take that analogy, but you get the point.

Happy Friday, Beloved

Many Gifts    One-a-Day Thursday 7/6/23

A life worthy

And in the church God has appointed first of all apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then workers of miracles, also those having gifts of healing, those able to help others, those with gifts of administration, and those speaking in different kinds of tongues  (1 Corinthians 12:27-28).

This is kind of an odd, eclectic list, when you read it closely. I mean, you’ve got apostles and prophets at the top. This makes sense–the apostles had been with Jesus and were the founders of the Church. And prophets? Sure, prophets would be right up there at the top–no question. But teachers in the #3 position? Ahead of miracle workers? That’s something to ponder. It really speaks to the importance of the Word of God. (I mean, I’m assuming Paul is not referring to history and geography teachers like me.)

Then, after the Big Three, Paul gives a kind of random list of gifts. I know it’s not exhaustive, and it doesn’t totally match up with the list of spiritual gifts he gave earlier, but still…

miracle workers

healers

those who help others–(this seems to be a very broad category)

administrators–(my principal will be pleased to read this)

those who speak in tongues.

The point here, it seems to me, is that there is a wide and diverse variety of gifts, but they all have two major things in common:

  1. They are given by God, and
  2. They are to be used to build His Church.

Beloved, it’s not about trying to find yourself on this list. It’s about realizing that whatever talents you have–and you do have them–they are gifts given by the Lord of Everything to bless others. So go be you and do what you do–for the glory of God.

Happy Thursday, Beloved

God Has Appointed One-a-Day Wednesday 7/5/23

A life worthy

And in the church God has appointed  (1 Corinthians 12:28).

Before we get into the list of what God has appointed folks to do, I just want to remind us…

God has appointed.

It isn’t you who decides your role, Beloved, just as it isn’t you who plants the gifts.

God is in charge of those decisions.

I’m not advocating a passive faith. I believe we are called to take hold of the Kingdom of God with both hands and work out spiritual butts off for God’s glory.

But

at the end of the day, remember that it is God who gives the gift

and the call

and the strength

and the Spirit to make it all happen.

Breathe deep, Beloved, and do what He has given you to do today.

No more, no less

Happy Wednesday.

Dad  One-a-Day Monday  7/3/23

A life worthy

Honor your father and mother, that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God is giving you (Exodus 20:12).

Today is my Dad’s birthday.

He died about five weeks ago, so this is the first birthday I will celebrate in his absence.

It is the first of many things I will do in his absence.

We’ve had a season of loss here in Michael Land. My mom died in November, and my dad in May, so I went from fully-parented to orphan in just over six months. I know I haven’t really processed it yet, but as today is his birthday, I wanted to honor him.

And I find, to my chagrin, that I’m not sure how.

I mean, my dad would not want a big tribute. He was a private man and would never approve of me devoting a blog post to him–even one with an audience as small as mine. The whole idea that I am writing about him this morning he would find uncomfortable.

So I will not write about him. I will write about the man he inspires me to be.

My father has inspired me to be a dad

who is always there

who tells his children that he loves them

who hugs…a lot

who plays with his kids way beyond their kid-years

who is wise

who follows Christ

who leads his children in the ways of God

who comes to the end of his life knowing that he has loved and been loved.

Happy Birthday, Dad.

And Happy Monday, Beloved

Now   One-a-Day Friday 6/30/23

A life worthy

Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it (1 Corinthians 12:27).

Some things in the Kingdom of God we have to wait for.

The end of sin

The end of death

That perfected body I keep not seeing in the mirror

But

Now we are the body of Christ.

Now

Not tomorrow, not next week, but now.

The body may be a little bruised, a tad arthritic, may even be balding and nearsighted. As we await our own perfected bodies, so we await the perfected Church.

But we are part of the body of Christ now.

We are needed now.

So, in the words of the song,

Rise up, oh Church of God

Have done with lesser things

Give heart and soul and mind and strength

To serve the King of Kings.

Now

Happy Friday, Beloved
