Joy and Grief One-a-Day Thursday 6/29/23

A life worthy

If one part suffers, every part suffers with it; if one part is honored, every part rejoices with it  (1 Corinthians 12:26).

We lost a friend yesterday.

I’ve mentioned that I’m part of a local community theater. It’s a big family, with people coming and going for different shows. Some people drop in once or twice a year, while other folks practically live there. As schedules and jobs and lives change, there is a certain ebb and flow to our numbers. We see one-and-dones, and we have lifers. The theater has seen numerous couples meet, marry, and raise their families, all within our little body. I have personally witnessed this twice.

Sometimes members of our little body  die.

And it hurts.

Yesterday was one of those days.

It is good to belong to a family.

It is messy.

It is painful.

but

It is good.

Happy Thursday, Beloved

Honor One-a-Day Wednesday 6/28/23

A life worthy

But God has combined the members of the body and has given greater honor to the parts that lacked it, so that there should be no division in the body, but that its parts should have equal concern for each other (1 Corinthians 12:24-25).

One of my favorite books is The Great Divorce by C.S. Lewis. If you’re not familiar with it, go read it. But in the meantime, I’ll tell you that the tale is of a man who, in a vision, gets to visit Heaven for just a bit. During his time there, he observes several encounters between people who have recently died and the residents of Heaven, the redeemed of the Lord. My favorite bit involves this woman who arrives on the scene with all the pomp and circumstance of a queen. She has trumpeters and dancers and retainers and the whole razzmatazz.  The narrator asks his companion, who is also a resident of Heaven, who this woman is. He assumes that she must have been royalty in life to merit  such treatment in the afterlife. The narrator is stunned to learn that, in life, this woman was a “nobody.” She had a menial job and lived in poverty. In Paul’s body analogy, she would have been a kneecap or a random nerve. But…she loved God with all her heart and demonstrated this love by acts of mercy and kindness to the people around her. In the eyes of God, she was worthy of great honor.

I know that’s just a story, but it reminds me that God sees things differently than I do, and what He honors is sometimes different from what I would honor. So, the next time you are seated in church, look around. You are in the presence of royalty.

Happy Wednesday, Beloved.

Indispensable One-a-Day Tuesday 6/27/23

A life worthy

The eye cannot say to the hand, “I don’t need you!”  And the head cannot say to the feet, “I don’t need you!” On the contrary, those parts of the body that seem to be weaker are indispensable, and the parts that we think are less honorable we treat with special honor  (1 Corinthians 12:21-23).

I do some work with a local community theater. One of the things that I love about the place is that the people there never seem to get hung up on their “rank” or position. A person may be the leading actor in one show, getting applause and adulation from the audience, and for the next show they’re painting sets in an empty theater. No autographs, no applause. They don’t mind, because they aren’t there for glory. They are there to serve.

Beloved, you can be preaching or parking cars, serving Communion or sweeping floors. It doesn’t matter. You are serving the Church, and you are indispensable.

Happy Tuesday, Beloved

Unity  One-a-Day Monday  6/26/23

A life worthy

If they were all one part, where would the body be? As it is, there are many parts, but one body  (1 Corinthians 12:19-20).

It’s not about uniformity.

It’s about unity.

Your walk with Christ looks different from mine because your gifts and talents and life experiences are different from mine. And that’s  good, because while there are things I do really well, there are also things at which I stink. If the Church were filled with Michaels, we would have fun, but a lot of important things would not get done.

As I think about my own church, our own little reflection of the body of Christ, I see this at work. So many different people, from so many different walks of life, with so many different passions and experiences and skill sets, all devoted to the same God. We’ve got kidneys and spinal columns and phalanges all doing their various things, all working to further the Kingdom of God.

At least, that’s how it is on a good day.

Happy Monday, Beloved

Places One-a-Day Thursday  6/23/23

A life worthy

Oh, Yeah, life goes on

Long after the thrill of living is gone…

A singularly depressing and unwholesome song, yet possessing a kernel of truth.

I’ve rambled on before about how theater is kind of a metaphor for life.  I think of this again as I prepare for another round of Hunchback. It happens about this point in about every show.  Call time may be 6:00 p.m., but it will be 6:10…6:20…6:25 before all of us have dragged our sorry bones into the seats.  There is often a pervasive sense of…blah.

I’m sorry—blah is a technical term.  It means ennui, or lassitude.  In any case, it will take some doing for us to rise to the occasion.

They tell me this is common in the theater.  You go through the work of rehearsal, building a show piece by piece.  The tension and excitement increase as you get closer and closer to opening.  Finally, there is the pure adrenalin rush of opening night.  This rush takes you through the Saturday evening show and the Sunday matinee.

Then you go home.

For five days.

When the next week rolls around, and the next, and the next, you can find that, in part, the idea of performing has slipped from the category of “get to” into “have to.”

It’s not new anymore.

But the audience deserves a show—the very best you have in you.  They paid for it, after all, and you promised it.

So you pray, you dig deep, and you go through the motions of setting props, getting into costumes, checking mics.  And somewhere in the process, you rediscover the joy that brought you here in the first place.

See the multitudinous connections?

Of course you do–you’re brilliant.

Hmm…marriage.  A lot of marriages—even Christian marriages—end in divorce.  Why?  Because the fun wears off, the adrenalin rush passes, and we get…blah.    But your spouse deserves the best you have in you.  They paid for it, after all, and you promised it.  So you pray, you dig deep, and keep loving, and serving, and being together.  And somewhere in the process, you rediscover the love that brought you here in the first place.

Let’s see…what about jobs?  Kids? Friendships?  Goals?  Dreams?  The pattern fits.

What about your walk with Christ?

Sometimes the joy is there, vibrant, thrumming through me like a power chord.

Sometimes not.

Sometimes, by the time my metaphorical Friday rolls around, I’m tired, drained, and flat out not in the mood.   Jesus tells me to abide in him.  To remain in him.  But—to be truthful—sometimes I’m just not into it.  I get tired. Bored.  What kind of idiot gets bored with the God of the Universe?

My kind.

Sometimes I feel like it’s all a show, and I’m just not up for it.

But I have an audience, and He deserves the very best that is in me.

He paid for it.

I promised it.

So I pray, I dig deep, and yes, sometimes I go through the motions.  I set the props, I put on the costume, I check my mic.  And somewhere in the process, I rediscover the powerful, sustaining love that brought me here in the first place.

Places, everyone.

Of Eyes and Ears  One-a-Day Friday 6/23/23

A life worthy

If the whole body were an eye, where would the sense of hearing be? If the whole body were an ear, where would the sense of smell be? But in fact God arranged the parts of the body, every one of them, just as he wanted them to be (1 Corinthians 12:17-18).

He has a plan,

and

you’re in it.

So, instead of focusing on all that you are not–and yes, there’s a whole lot that you are not–how about focusing on all that you are?

Lean into your strengths, Beloved, and see what He does with you.

Happy Friday

Many Parts One-a-Day Thursday 6/22/23

A life worthy

Now the body is not made up of one part, but of many. If the foot should say, “Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body,” it would not for that reason cease to be part of the body. And if the ear should say, “Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body,” it would not for that reason cease to be part of the body  (1 Corinthians 12:14).

You’re part of the Body of Christ.

I don’t know which part, but a part.

If you spend your time wishing you were something else, you will miss out on the chance to do what you have been created to do. Oh, and all parts of the Body of Christ are essential, so don’t go claiming that you’re a hangnail or a goiter or something like that. The Lord of Everything has hand-crafted you and gifted you for the purpose He has in mind. So you do you, as the cool kids say, and trust the One who loves you.

Happy Thursday, Beloved

One Spirit One-a-Day Wednesday 6/21/23

A life worthy

For we were all baptized by one Spirit into one body–whether Jews or Greeks, slave or free–and we were all given one Spirit to drink  (1 Corinthians 12:13).

Be careful.

Taken out of context, this can look like Paul is preaching that all people are part of the Body. That he’s advocating a Brotherhood of Man, we are all God’s children, many roads lead to God kind of business.

Nope

Thank God for context.

Paul is talking–as he has been all along–about Christ-following, Gospel-preaching, Spirit-filled believers. And within that context, we have the joy of knowing that we are one body. The things that sometimes so often divide us–race, socioeconomic status, cultural background–are nothing when placed against the One who unites us. Keep that in mind as you head into your day.

Happy Wednesday, Beloved

The Body One-a-Day Tuesday 6/20/23

A life worthy

The body is a unit, though it is made up of many parts; and though its parts are many, they form one body. So it is with Christ  (1 Corinthians 12:12).

And so we see one of the greatest analogies in Scripture.

The idea of the Body of Christ permeates the Christian world. It is perhaps the most enduring metaphor for the Church.

We are many.

We are different.

And yet, we are one.

We’ll dive deeper into this over the next few days, but for now simply consider this:

You belong.

You may feel that you are a random bit of fluff in the universe, but you are not.

You have a purpose and great worth. You are part of something far bigger than yourself. You, my friend, are a small piece of how the God of Everything  chooses to express Himself in this world.

Rest in that today, Beloved.

Happy Tuesday

Freedom One-a-Day Monday  6/19/23

A life worthy

The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives, and release from darkness for the prisoners…  (Isaiah 61:1).

Today is a holiday.

Juneteenth

Today we celebrate freedom for the captives, an end to slavery. It is good and right that we should do this.

There’s a bunch of political and social tension surrounding this holiday, but I choose to celebrate it for what it is–the joyful culmination of a long and bitter fight to end a great evil. Praise God.

Beloved, there is an irony built into this holiday that we shouldn’t ignore. On paper, the slaves had been free for well over two years prior to June 19, 1865.

They just didn’t know it–and their captors weren’t about to tell them.

Christ Jesus came to set a world full of captives free from the power of sin and death. He has paid the price, and we are free.

But some don’t know it yet–and their captor isn’t about to tell them. So they continue to live in bondage, waiting for a freedom that has already been bought.

Spread the Word, Beloved.

Happy Juneteenth
