Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit (Ephesians 5:18).

If I could let go, leave my self-consciousness behind, and be swept away…
If I could be consumed with the desire for more, no matter what it cost me…
If I could live for God the way an alcoholic lives for his next drink…
Well, now…that would be something, hmm?

Well said! I have often paraphrased it, “Don’t be under the influence of alcohol, but rather, be under the influence of the Holy Spirit!” That way, just as people can observe and note, “He’s not himself” when one is drunk, they can hopefully observe and note, “He’s not (merely) himself–in a good way!–when under the Spirit’s influence! 🙂
