  • One-a-Day Thursday, 10/2/13

number 1Speak to one another with psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs.  Sing and make music in your heart to the Lord, always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. (Ephesians 5:19-20)

    What’s your favorite worship song?

Yeah, that one—the one you’re thinking of right now.

How about you sing it today—all day?  Sing it to yourself, sing it to the people around you, sing it to the Lord of your heart.  Sing it loud when you can and quietly when you must.  Sing it whether today develops into a beautiful day or a rat-breath day.

I’ll bet, somehow, it ends up being a beautiful day.

    Happy Thursday, Beloved.

  • One-a-Day Monday 5/12/14

number 1Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God—this is your spiritual act of worship (Romans 12:1).

The Jews offered a dead sacrifice.  They were, in a sense, fulfilling a contract, paying, “The wages of sin” that Paul talks about in Romans 6:23.  But we are not under that contract—that law.  We are under the covenant of grace.  We receive “The gift of God…eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord” that comes in the second half of that verse.  So our sacrifice is a living sacrifice.  We offer ourselves.

I mentioned on Saturday that I think I could die for Jesus if it came to that—if someone put a gun to my head and told me to deny him, or some such thing.  I’m sure that, under the same conditions, you would die for him as well.

But we’re not called to die for him—not in that sense.

We’re called to live for him.  And, some days, that can seem so much harder.

One definition of worship is, “To offer God all that we are in response to all that he is.” I like that, because it implies that everything we do can be worship, if we do it for him.

Will you worship him today, Beloved?  Will you offer your body—your life—to him, to do with as he pleases?  I don’t know what that will entail, but I know that it will bring you closer to your Lord.

And it will bring him the glory he deserves.

Not a bad way to start your week, hmm?

  • Lessons from the Dog

IMG_1742I’m way too much like my dog.

    And yet not enough.

    Confusing?  Tell me about it.

Summer is here, and for me that means early morning walks with the lovely Mandibles of Death.  You may remember this pooch.  Her given name is Amanda, but she has claimed the title Mandibles.  She has earned it, too, being vicious in a way that only fluffy Golden Retrievers can be.

I try to use our daily walk as prayer time.  The fresh morning air and invigorating exercise are supposed to free up my mind for communion with God.  That’s the plan, anyway.  As we cruised along the block today, I couldn’t help but notice that there are ways in which Mandy reminds me, uncomfortably, of myself.   (more…)

  • Family Worship

    Praying Hands

O.K., this time there will be no rabbit trails.  In my last post, I started to talk about our family’s worship experience, and I got distracted by the issue of sleep.

    I love sleep.

Anyway, it is a bit ironic that I got distracted when I was talking about worship.  You see, my family always gets distracted when we attempt to worship. (more…)

How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria?

How do you solve a problem like Maria…

I’m sorry; that had nothing to do with this post.  I don’t know Maria, but I’m sure she is capable of dealing with her own issues.  It’s just that I happen to be writing this from backstage at The Sound of Music, a show that my daughter and I are involved in.  I never would have heard about this show, much less been in it, if not for my daughter. I owe you my thanks, Riss.  If I had missed this show, I would have missed out on a key element of my quest for A Life Worthy. (more…)
