    Free One-a-Day Monday  11/27/17

Give thanks with a grateful heart.

Give thanks to the Holy One.

Give thanks because he’s given Jesus Christ, his son.

And now let the weak say, “I am strong…”

Let the poor say, “I am rich,”

Because of what the Lord has done for us.

And now let the sick say, “I am whole,”

Let the bound say, “I am free,”

Because of what the Lord has done for us.

    (Give Thanks, Don Moen, 1986)

    Do you feel free?

Sometimes I feel rather bound, actually.

    I’m bound by time.

    I’m bound by finances.

I’m bound by what others expect of me.

I’m bound by what I expect of myself.

    I’m bound by my failures

    and my successes

    and my fear of failure

    or success.

And yet, I know the Truth.

I know him personally…and he has set me free.

Beloved, when will I finally get it through my thick head that my feelings are a very poor gauge of reality?

    Maybe today?

    Sing the song, Beloved.

    Believe the song, Beloved.

    Happy Monday, Beloved.

  • Whole One-a-Day Friday  11/24/17

    Whole One-a-Day Friday  11/24/17

Give thanks with a grateful heart.

Give thanks to the Holy One.

Give thanks because he’s given Jesus Christ, his son.

And now let the weak say, “I am strong…”

Let the poor say, “I am rich,”

Because of what the Lord has done for us.

And now let the sick say, “I am whole…”

    (Give Thanks, Don Moen, 1986)

God is not bound by time.

    Stay with me here.

God created time.  He exists outside of it.  He is simultaneously present at all moments of eternity.

    So…..?

So, my body may ache, my soul may weep, my society may be wracked with sin and pain and loss.

    but

God sees more.  He sees me as I am, but also as I will be.  He sees the aching, but also the relief.  He hears the weeping, but also the rejoicing.  He knows the sin, but also the redemption.

Singing this line is not a denial or what is.  It is a celebration of what also is.

Not just someday, but right now.  Because for God, it’s all right now.

When God looks at you…what does he see?

    Wow

    Happy Friday, Beloved.

  • Thanksgiving One-a-Day Thursday  11/23/17

    Thanksgiving One-a-Day Thursday  11/23/17

Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his love endures forever (1 Chronicles 16: 34).

    Busy day today.

You’ve got a turkey to burn, cranberries to sauce, potatoes to mash, tables to set, dishes to break, shards to sweep up, relatives to endure/enjoy…

Beloved, take a moment, right now, before the craziness descends.  Offer your heart and your mind and your day and your life to Him in thanksgiving.  If you don’t do it now…

Breathe deep, and thank him that he chooses to be good

That he chooses to love you

That he chooses to love you forever, not until he gets bored with you or until you mess up in some way and displease him

    Because…no offense…but I’m sure that’s already happened.

He could choose to stop loving you, but he won’t.

It’s in his power, but it’s not in his nature.

    His love endures forever.

    You are his Beloved.

    Forever

    Happy Thanksgiving, Beloved.

  • Rich One-a-Day Wednesday  11/22/17

    Rich One-a-Day Wednesday  11/22/17

Give thanks with a grateful heart.

Give thanks to the Holy One.

Give thanks because he’s given Jesus Christ, his son.

And now, let the weak say, “I am strong…”

Let the poor say, “I am rich,”

Because of what the Lord has done for us.

    (Give Thanks, Don Moen, 1986)

    Yes you are.

    Rich

Oh, your car may be falling apart and your dishwasher may be dying and you may be checking the sofa for enough change to make a Del Taco run, but you are rich.

First, in this world you are rich. Beloved, there are people out there who pray for shoes so they won’t have to walk barefoot

who pray for clean water to wash the dishes with

who pray for dishes…and food to put on them.

And in the spiritual world…are you kidding?  You’re the beloved child of the King of, you know, Everything.

You are in possession of the greatest treasure the universe has ever known:

    the love of God.

Baby, you are rolling in it.

Bask in your wealth today, Beloved.

    Happy Wednesday.

  • Strong One-a-Day Tuesday  11/21/17

    Strong One-a-Day Tuesday  11/21/17

Give thanks with a grateful heart.

Give thanks to the Holy One.

Give thanks because he’s given Jesus Christ, his son.

And now, let the weak say, “I am strong…”

    Context is really important.

This line from Don Moen’s song is found in the Bible in Joel 3:10.  Of course, those of you who look it up will find that the Lord is actually speaking to the enemies of Israel, the nations who have plundered and destroyed his people.  God is essentially telling them to “Bring it on,” to prepare to fight, because God is going to turn them to powder.

Not exactly the same feeling Mr. Moen was looking to engender in his song.

Why am I telling you this?  Well, for one thing, I want you to be Biblically literate.  If we’re going to use Scripture, we should at least know what it really says.

Also, even with the contextual confusion, this remains one of my all-time favorite worship songs.  And the message is true, even if the reference is a bit askew.  The Bible is full of the truth that God gives strength to the weak.  He offers–may I be so bold as to say that he longs–to show his strength in our feebleosity.

    Do you feel weak?

Well, you are…you know… in and of yourself.

    But in Christ…oh, baby!

In Christ you are mighty.  In Christ, you have the power to do battle with whatever comes against you today.  In Christ, your weakness is transformed into his great strength.

So now, though you are weak, say, “I am strong!”

    Happy Tuesday, Beloved.

  • Take Time One-a-Day Monday  11/20/17

    Take Time One-a-Day Monday  11/20/17

As we close in on Thanksgiving, I’m going to look at one of my favorite worship songs.  It’s written by Don Moen.  Part of it is Scripture; all of it is scriptural.  Feel free to sing along!

Give thanks with a grateful heart.

Give thanks to the Holy One.

Give thanks, because he’s given Jesus Christ, his son.

Are you thankful today, Beloved?  Do you even have time to stop and think of all you have to be thankful for? Or are you so busy preparing your house or your travel plans that preparing your heart has slipped down the list? Even worse–has your Christmas to-do list leapfrogged Thanksgiving entirely?  Look, I’m not judging; I know you’ve got a lot to do.  Myself, I’m looking at a garage that needs to be cleaned–I’ve been putting it off for eight months now–just so I can get to the Christmas lights, most of which are broken, if I remember correctly.  I have a vague memory of an entire string of lights falling from the roof last January, resulting in a string of mini-explosions and a decision that I would replace all the lights “Next year,” when finances would undoubtedly be better, except they’re not.  So I’ve probably gotta buy lights, and garland, and maybe a lawn elf–but no inflatables, I’m passionately against inflatables–before I can even start decorating, and some of the neighbors are done already…

    Yeah, so I get it.

But, for those of us in Christ, the One we give thanks for this Thursday is the same One we celebrate at Christmas.  It’s pretty much the same holiday; you just have to swap funny hats.

Of course, you know that already…you’re a bright one.

So, hey, take time this week–like today, like right now–to stop and breathe and give thanks.

    For him

    For you and him

    Happy Monday, Beloved.

  • Thank You One-a-Day Friday  11/10/17

    Thank You One-a-Day Friday  11/10/17

Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends(John 15:13).

    Thank you, Veteran.

Thank you for leaving your home behind in order to protect it.

Thank you for setting aside your freedoms to help safeguard mine.

Thank you for fighting for my right to protest, even when my protest saddens or angers or disgusts you.

Thank you for shouldering a rifle, or climbing into a chopper, or racing toward a bomb blast, knowing that today could be the day that you are called to give “the last full measure of devotion.”

    You must be terrified.

    You go anyway.

    For me.

    Thank you.

  • October Thanksgiving  One-a-Day Tuesday    10/31/17

    October Thanksgiving  One-a-Day Tuesday    10/31/17

Speak to one another with psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs.  Sing and make music in your heart to the Lord, always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. (Ephesians 5:19-20)

Today is Halloween.  A day on which this fallen world celebrates death and darkness.  Oh, they wrap it in candy and pumpkins, but it is what it is.

Maybe today could be your personal Thanksgiving. Make a point of noticing the blessings in your life.  Point them out to your friends and praise God together.  Pick your favorite worship song and get it stuck in your head.  In short, fill yourself with life, not death…with light, not darkness.

Yes, you can still eat candy.

    Happy Tuesday, Beloved.

  • 911 One-a-Day Monday    9/11/17

    911 One-a-Day Monday    9/11/17

Deliver me, O my God, from the hand of the wicked, from the grasp of evil and cruel men (Psalm 71:4).

    Sixteen years.

Sixteen years since “Nine-One-One” became “Nine-Eleven.”

Sixteen years since we awakened to fire and smoke and terror and grief.

Sixteen years since the hand of the wicked reached out to strike at our nation.

It was a horrific reminder that there is evil in this world.  Evil will always attack the innocent.  Evil will always set itself against the people of God.

And yet, you didn’t really need the reminder, did you?  You’ve known the attack of evil—maybe not on so grand a scale, but you’ve known it.

    And you will again.

It comes with the territory.  It’s part of the package of being His, of living for Christ in this world.

    And so is deliverance.

As surely as the sun rose this morning.

As surely as the Son rose long ago.

God will not let evil win.  Not in this world.  Not in your life.

So as you remember 911 today, as you see the proud flags and hear the lofty speeches, remember your own personal 911’s, and how God has brought you through them.

And trust that he will again.

    Walk in remembrance today, Beloved.

  • The Work

    The Work

A few thoughts about work on your Labor Day.

Once upon a time, while sitting in an airport in Bucharest

Great start to a story, isn’t it?  I should follow up with a tale of espionage, intrigue, fast cars, and spiffy accents.

    Except, I’m me.

Once upon a time, while sitting in an airport in Bucharest waiting for my flight, I observed two men toiling at a job both menial and fraught with danger.

    They were window washers…sort of.

Actually, they could best be described as skylight washers, but without the special equipment you may have come to expect from your average semi-professional skylight washers.  No scaffolding for these men, no sissy safety belts—if you fall, well, that’s just job security for the custodian.  Simply two men, a hose, and a long, long rope.

The operation went something like this:  Skylight Washer #1 was stationed on the roof of the airport—oh, say, 30 feet up.  SW #2 was stationed directly below, standing on the marble floor of the terminal. (I think the floor was marble—it looked very marbleish.  If you are familiar with the 1990 Bucharest International Airport terminal, and know that I am mistaken, please correct me.  If not, just take my word for it and move on.)

In any case, SW#1 would remove a 2ft. x 6ft.-ish panel of glass from the skylight, wrap his trusty rope around it—a single loop, no more, I’m sure it will be fine—and lower it gently to SW#2 who was, I repeat, waiting about 30ft. directly below, and surrounded by passengers making their way through the terminal.

    What could possibly go wrong?

As it happened, nothing went wrong, though I must admit to a morbid fantasy that involved twelve square feet of glass hitting that marbleish floor and exploding like a mortar round.

By the way, this all happened on that glorious April 1990 morning when the Romanian airline pilots discovered the joys of capitalism and went on strike, so I had plenty of time to watch, being stranded and all.

Once the glass panel reached the floor, SW#2 would untie the rope, hoist the glass in his burly arms, and descend a flight of stairs.  I can only assume there was a hose and drain of some sort down there; SW#2 would invariably return to the surface with a cleanish, dripping wet pane of glass.  He would retie the rope around the pane and call to his partner, who would hoist it aloft to its nest in the roof.

One down; several hundred to go.

When I started this post, I was going to use that story to illustrate a rather delightful rant about inefficiency.  It’s a plague I’ve been enduring of late.  However, I have had some conversations recently that have sent me in a different direction.

So, here’s the different direction:  Do you think those two men felt called to be skylight washers?

Seriously.  I mean, we spend so much time wondering if our lives are fulfilling, if we are doing what we were “meant” to do.  I wonder if that’s healthy?  I wonder if those two men were pining for lost dreams, or if they were simply glad to have a job to do so they could feed their families.

I don’t think Charles Ingalls questioned his calling to be a farmer.  He was too busy farming.

This blog, as you may have noticed, is inspired by Ephesians 4:1

As a prisoner for the Lord, therefore, I urge you to life a life worthy of the calling you have received…

But the idea there is really about my calling to follow Christ, as well as the callings to husband, to father, to teach.  It’s less about what I do, and more about how I do what I do.

Still, I see people worried about their “calling.”  Either they’re sad because they aren’t doing what (they think) God has called them to do, or they’re depressed because they can’t find their “calling.”  I’ve certainly been there.  It kind of reminds me of a ‘60s-style drifter, wandering the country trying to “find himself.”

The more I think about it, the more I think that this drive to find some higher sense of purpose and fulfillment is an unpleasant byproduct of our affluent society.  If I plopped you down in the middle of name your deserted rugged wilderness, your calling would become a simple one: survive.

I can’t think of any Biblical characters searching for their calling.  If God had something particular in mind for them, he had several delightful ways of making it known.  Otherwise, the heroes of the faith simply did what was in front of them to the best of their abilities and to the glory of God.

I look in Scripture and I see that we are called to follow Christ.

    We are called to hope.

    We are called to peace.

We are called to be saints.

Again, it’s more about how we do than what we do.

Could it really be that simple?  Is it really just a matter of,

Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for man (Colossians 3:23)?

    How freeing is that?

So, here it is: Michael’s formula for finding God’s calling on your life.

Ready?  You can take notes if you want.

Step #1 Do what’s right in front of you.

Step #2 Do it with joy, thanksgiving, and “as working for the Lord.”

Step #3 If the opportunity arises to do something that you are good at, that brings you joy, and that honors God, take it.

    Step #4 Repeat Steps #1 and #2.

Maybe I’m wrong; perhaps God will call you to disagree with me.  If so, be gentle in your correction—my heart’s in the right place.
